"The United States is a federal union of 50 states, with the District of Columbia as the seat of the federal government. The Constitution outlines the structure of the national government and specifies its powers and activities, and defines the relationship between the national government and individual state governments. Power is shared between the national and state (local) governments. Within each state are counties, townships, cities and villages, each of which has its own elective government."

If you are interested in democracy or in my case liberal democracy, as a Jack Kennedy Liberal Democrat, then of course you are also interested in politics and government, because that's how we elect our leaders and the quality of government and representatives (for good and bad) and why we pay the taxes that we do and why we have to pay those taxes.

But even if you are not interested in politics from a personal perspective because you think politics and government and public policy is boring, you should also have an interest in politics and government, because you have to pay for it whether you want to or not and have a right to know how your tax dollars are being spent.
