FSMD: President Harry S. Truman

Source:Wikipedia- President Harry S. Truman (Democrat, Missouri) 33rd President of the United States. (1945-53)

"During his few weeks as Vice President, Harry Truman scarcely saw President Franklin Roosevelt, and received no briefing on the development of the atomic bomb or the unfolding difficulties with Soviet Russia. Suddenly these and a host of other wartime problems became Truman’s to solve when, on April 12, 1945, he became America’s 33rd President.

During his few weeks as Vice President, Harry S. Truman scarcely saw President Roosevelt, and received no briefing on the development of the atomic bomb or the unfolding difficulties with Soviet Russia. Suddenly these and a host of other wartime problems became Truman’s to solve when, on April 12, 1945, he became President. He told reporters, “I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me.”

I don't think Harry Truman was a perfect President and I wish he was stronger on civil and equal rights for all Americans. But he did desegregate the U.S. Armed Forces and he did recognize the State of Israel which gave Jews their own homeland, especially after the holocaust in Europe in the 1930s and 40s.

I have President Truman on a Progressive Page, because he truly was a Progressive. He wanted an America that could work for more Americans and where more Americans could live in freedom. Not just people who were born to wealth. And he's one of our great Progressive President's, if you just look at where the country was when he became President in 1945 and where we were when he left office in 1953.
