Al Jazeera: Inside USA- 'Angela Davis on The Prison Industrial Complex'

Source:Al Jazeera- Professor Angela Davis on Inside USA.
Source:The New Democrat

"Put on the FBI's 'Most Wanted' list when she was just 26, Angela Davis became an enduring symbol of 1970's Black Power. She joins Inside USA to discuss incarceration in the land of the free, capitalism in a time of economic crisis and what it means to be the face of Black Power in a supposedly post-racial US.

At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.'
Reaching more than 270 million households in over 140 countries across the globe, our viewers trust Al Jazeera English to keep them informed, inspired, and entertained.
Our impartial, fact-based reporting wins worldwide praise and respect. It is our unique brand of journalism that the world has come to rely on.
We are reshaping global media and constantly working to strengthen our reputation as one of the world's most respected news and current affairs channels."

"Al Jazeera (Arabic: الجزيرة, romanized: al-jazīrah, IPA: [æl (d)ʒæˈziːrɐ], "The Peninsula")[3] is a state-owned Arabic-language international radio and TV broadcaster of Qatar. It is based in Doha and operated by the media conglomerate Al Jazeera Media Network. The flagship of the network, its station identification, is Al Jazeera.

The patent holding is a "private foundation for public benefit" under Qatari law.[4] Under this organizational structure, the parent receives funding from the government of Qatar but maintains its editorial independence.[5][6] In June 2017, the Saudi, Emirati, Bahraini, and Egyptian governments insisted on the closure of the entire conglomerate as one of thirteen demands made to the Government of Qatar during the Qatar diplomatic crisis.[citation needed] The channel has been criticised by some organisations as well as nations such as Saudi Arabia for being "Qatari propaganda"

From Wikipedia

Just to talk about this interview for a minute or less: (depending on how fast you read) I guess Al Jazeera didn’t think the interviewer was important enough to give out his name. Because I have no idea whose the guy who interviewed Professor Davis on this show.

Also, this was not what you would call a hard-hitting interview. (Baseball season is over) This was an interview where the two people in it share the same views and where their minds are already made up. The interviewer asked leaning questions to get the person being interviewed to back up what they already think and know. Which is their right of course and opinionated journalism certainly exists. Especially on ideologically leaning news networks like Al Jazeera.

Having said all of that, I agree with Angela Davis when it comes to the prison industrial complex. America being this great liberal democracy that we are, locks up too many people in this country. And part of that has to do with the facts that we arrest send people to prison for too many things. When sending them to even county jail for a shorter sentence, or getting them in halfway houses for non-drug addicted non-violent offenders, or drug rehab for drug offenders, would be a much better more cost-effective way of dealing with people with these conditions.

And another reason why we lock up more people than anyone else and a lot of people on the Left especially the Far-Left aren’t going to want to hear this, we have a lot more dangerous criminals per-capita and in total numbers than anyone else.

If you look at some of our super-max and other maximum security prisons, you would be able to see that the inmates who are there, are exactly where they need to be. But that doesn’t excuse how we treat people who aren’t dangerous in this country. And I’m not talking about so-called economic terrorists who steals people’s money by using cons and other scams. But drug offenders meaning users and other low-level non-violent offenders like car thieves. Offenders like that who don’t need to be in prison.

So based on this, we need a criminal justice and prison system in this country. You want to live in anarchy, be my guess, but you won’t do it in America. But we need one that treats hard-core criminals for exactly what they are, as threats to society who need to be in prison and then after they are there they need to be treated in a humane responsible way that protect society and people in prison. But also prepares them for life on the outside, assuming they aren’t serving life without. While we come up with a smarter and more responsible system for how we treat low-level non-violent offenders in America.

From Wikipedia

Its President Ahmadinejad's and the rest of his administration's fault that the Iranian economy is in the shape that they are in. Because they are Theocratic Socialists and like most politicians authoritarian and otherwise, don't know how to run an entire national economy.

Iran is a country of 75M people and physically the size of Saudi Arabia and Libya with first world people and resources and yet they are still a third world country because of their government. And the Iranian people need to wake up to that fact and do something about it.

Al Jazeera: France Relaxes Stance On Immigration

Source:Al Jazeera reporter Charlie Angela.

"In 2010, about 116,000 foreigners were granted French citizenship, but in 2011 that figure fell by almost 30 per cent to 87,000. A more relaxed system under the country's new socialist government should reverse the decline and encourage many more to apply for a passport, but this is something the opposition is fighting hard to stop. Whatever their reason for wanting French nationality, immigrants will still have to navigate a maze of bureaucracy. Al Jazeera's Charlie Angela reports from Paris."

"The United States has called for a major overhaul of Syria's beleaguered opposition, saying it is time to move beyond the Syrian National Council (SNC) and bring in those who are "in the frontlines fighting and dying today".

Signalling a more active stance by Washington in attempts to form a credible political opposition to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, said a meeting next week in Qatar would be an opportunity to bring more people to the table and broaden the coalition against him.

From Wikipedia

A big problem that Greece has right now with its deficit and debt, is that their government is simply too big doing too much for the Greek people. Greeks expect way too much from their government. Which might be find when times are good and maybe they can bring in the taxes to pay for it. But when times are bad or real bad, it leads to high debt and deficits because the economy is way too slow to finance such a large socialist government that Greece has. Which is why they are being forced to not only cut the size of the Greek Government but to reform it so the Greek people are doing more for themselves and being less dependent on the Greek Government to support their lives.

But the good news is that with more privatization, comes more tax revenue to fund the things that the Greek Government should be doing for its people. So Greece right now needs to cut, reform and generate more economic growth, so more Greeks are working and collecting less public assistance.

As someone whose not even a prohibitionist, who doesn't even think that possession and usage of current illegal narcotics, for people who are 21 or over, should be illegal in America, who does believe in a high degree of personal freedom (as long as it comes with personal responsibility) I think this is this the way to go when it comes to tobacco. Educate smokers about the dangerous habit and regulate it, to discourage it. But don't legally punish people for simply hurting themselves.

As far as what the Cuban municipal delegate said in the video: she's obviously a supporter for the Communist Castro Regime in Cuba. So before you take anything that she says, even seriously. or anything that Al Jazeera reports, especially about western countries, I suggest you get some independent, honest, information first.

Al Jazeera: 'Venezuela Vote Result Could Impact Latin America'

Source:Al Jazeera- interviewing Pablo Pastro for this piece.

"Venezuela's Hugo Chavez is campaigning ahead of next Sunday's presidential election, where he hopes to be voted in for another term in office.  The vote will be crucial for the future of the oil-rich nation.   But the result could also affect many people far beyond Venezuela's borders, as the budgets of several Latin American countries factor in aid from Chavez's government.  Al Jazeera's Lucia Newman reports from Caracas."

I'm obviously no fan of Socialist President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. But it seems from this Al Jazeera piece (which is no right-wing news organization) that the Chavez Administration (if you want to call it that) has been giving way their oil and gas for free, to other Latin American countries with socialist government's, like Nicaragua and Cuba, simply because their ideological allies. That's Venezuelan money that was created in Venezuela, bye Venezuelans, that should be going into the Venezuelan economy, for the Venezuelan people, that instead is going to Nicaragua and Cuba, simply because those countries have socialist government's.

Al Jazeera: Jesse Mesner-Hage- 'Cuba Legalizes Sale of Private Property'

Source:Al Jazeera- welcome to Fidel Castro's Communist Republic of Cuba.

"Al Jazeera (Arabic: الجزيرة‎, romanized: al-jazīrah, IPA: [æl (d)ʒæˈziːrɐ], literally "The Island", though referring to the Arabian Peninsula in context)[3] is an international Arabic news channel based in Doha, Qatar that is operated by the media conglomerate Al Jazeera Media Network. The channel is a flagship of the media conglomerate and hence, is the only single offering to carry the name as simply "Al Jazeera" in its branding.

The channel's willingness to broadcast no holds barred views, for example on call-in shows, created controversies in the Arab States of the Persian Gulf. One of the station's office was the only channel to cover the War in Afghanistan live."

From Wikipedia

"Cuba's government has given its citizens the right to buy and sell their homes for the first time since the 1959 revolution.

The long-awaited reform, published on Thursday in the government's Official Gazette, is one one of the most substantial reforms introduced by Raul Castro, Cuba's president, to liberalize the island's Soviet-style command economy while maintaining the communist system..

Phil Peters, a Cuba expert at the Lexington Institute in Arlington, Virginia, said the move could have broad
ramifications for the Cuban economy, where the cash-strapped government is encouraging the growth of self-employment as it attempts to cut a million jobs from its bloated payrolls.

"The ability to sell houses means instant capital formation for Cuban families. It becomes a source of capital at the
grassroots level," Peters said. "It is a big sign of the government letting go."

Al Jazeera's Jesse Mesner-Hage reports."

Today there was another indication that Fidel Castro is out-of-power in Cuba and that his brother Raul is President Castro of the Communist Republic of Cuba. Perhaps even one day the President of the Socialist Republic of Cuba or even Democratic Republic of Cuba. But thats probably at least a decade off, but at least the Castro Regime has given its people some liberty and breathing space from this authoritarian regime that took power in Cuba fifty two years ago.

What looked like a real shot at bringing democracy to Egypt and finally ending authoritarian rule in this large country of 80M people, looks like its stagnating, as the military establishment in Egypt has become its effective ruler. And they are starting to have crackdowns on the democratic protesters in Egypt, as well as crackdowns on Coptic Christians in Egypt, a religious minority in Egypt. And he doesn't have a limit at least yet on how many people he's willing to have killed in order to do that. And China and Russia have been no help if anything the opposite, in preventing the mass- killings of people in Syria who are fed up with the Assad Regime and want a say in who represents them in government and how they live their lives.

The Arab League has actually been pretty responsible here and this is an organization that usually backs authoritarian regimes in Arabia. The European Union and United States have been tough in their rhetoric against the Assad Regime. And have started economic sanctions against the Assad Regime. But other than that haven't done much to stop the Assad Regime from murdering its own people. The Assad Regime is an actual government, that is murdering their own people.

Al Jazeera: Cal Perry- 'Opinion Divided Over Palestinian Statehood Bid'

Source:Al Jazeera- the United Nations (or World Debating Society) discussing Palestine.

"Al Jazeera (Arabic: الجزيرة‎, romanized: al-jazīrah, IPA: [æl (d)ʒæˈziːrɐ], literally "The Island", though referring to the Arabian Peninsula in context)[3] is a free-to-air international Arabic news channel based in Doha, Qatar that is operated by the media conglomerate Al Jazeera Media Network.

"The Palestinian Authority says it will seek recognition for a fully-fledged Palestinian state from the UN Security Council.

But not everyone's on board. The EU is still undecided on its position. Israel and the US are against the move.

Al Jazeera's Cal Perry reports from Jerusalem."

The Israeli-Palestinian area is an area thats basically divided into two different ethnic groups, as well as religions, that may never be able function as one country together. Which is why Palestine has basically become an independent territory of Israel. Similar to how Puerto Rico is a territory of America, where a significant number of Puerto Ricans a lot of them decedents from Spain consider Puerto Rico a country, a lot of Palestinians consider Palestine a country. Even though it';s not currently, but moving in that direction hopefully for them as well as Israel as far as I'm concern.

It's in Israel's interest as former Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Israel Shimone Peres once said. That Israel a tiny country (about the size of Delaware physically) and with a population of only 7M people, less than New York City (and Israel is a country) that Palestine become completely independent of Israel. And for them to govern their own affairs, but of course under certain conditions. So Israel wouldn't have any need to occupy another country and could just worry about the affairs of Israel and not the aide of another country as well. But only under certain conditions.

Palestine would first have a peace treaty similar to what Israel has with Egypt.

That Palestine would crackdown on terrorists in Palestine and Israel does the same thing in Israel. Terrorists that represent threats to both countries and that both countries aren't a threat to each other.

And the have diplomatic and trade relations with each other as well.

That neither country sponsors terrorists and they work together to defeat terrorism, that they become partners in the War on Terror. That they both recognize the right for the other to exist as well.

Palestine at this point is not ready to become an independent country: they don't have the ability to defend themselves and meet these conditions. They don't have the military or law enforcement capabilities to do these things. And they don't have a national government thats responsible for governing the whole country.

Al Jazeera: Nazanine Moshiri- 'Somalia Famine Spreads Beyond Reach of Aid'

Source:Al Jazeera- reporter Nazanine Moshiri.

The channel's willingness to broadcast no holds barred views, for example on call-in shows, created controversies in the Arab States of the Persian Gulf. One of the station's office was the only channel to cover the War in Afghanistan live."

From Wikipedia

"Famine has spread to a sixth area of Somalia and tens of thousands of people have died as a result of severe food shortages, the United Nations has said."

If you look at what nation building is and what it's supposed to be, go into a country thats never really been a country, with a government thats capable of governing the country in a responsible way. Somalia being the perfect example of that.

Nation building at its best, looks something like the Balkan region, where NATO, the European Union and the United States to a certain extent, took out ruthless dictators and terrorists who were murdering people because of their ethnicity: Albanians, Bosniaks, Serbians, Croats etc, and then sent in supplies and resources and gave them to the responsible people of these new countries, to build their new countries.

In the African Horn thats prone to terrorism and is very diverse ethnically with different peoples that don't like each other. The good news is that they don't have an authoritarian regime like the Assad Regime in Syria. The bad news is that they don't really have a government of their own at all that can defend and govern this large country. And they are going to need an international coalition that can help them get there.

And this is where the African Union and Arab League, can help Somalia, is right in their region can help. And the European Union, NATO and the United Nations as well as the United States with resources can be a big help as well.
