President Lyndon B. Johnson

Source:Wikipedia- President Lyndon B. Johnson (Democrat, Texas) 36th President of the United States.

"In the 1960 campaign, Lyndon B. Johnson was elected Vice President as John F. Kennedy’s running mate. On November 22, 1963, when Kennedy was assassinated, Johnson was sworn in as the 36th United States President, with a vision to build “A Great Society” for the American people.

“A Great Society” for the American people and their fellow men elsewhere was the vision of Lyndon B. Johnson. In his first years of office he obtained passage of one of the most extensive legislative programs in the Nation’s history. Maintaining collective security, he carried on the rapidly growing struggle to restrain Communist encroachment in Vietnam...

From The White House

As others have said, without the Vietnam War I believe Lyndon Johnson goes down as one of our greatest President's and I believe perhaps the greatest Progressive President, even better than Franklin Roosevelt. Just look at the state of the economy, all the civil rights legislation and enforcement that he got out of Congress with gave African-Americans the came legal rights as European-Americans, that alone would put him in the first class as not just one of our greatest Progressive President's, but one of our greatest President's period.

President Johnson was right to be anti-Communist (as all real Progressives are) but his handling of the Vietnam War and the fact that he frankly bullshitted the American people about his handling of the Vietnam War and the colossal failure that it was, brings LBJ down to the middle of the pact as far as U.S. President's, but his domestic record is about as good as any President (Progressive or otherwise) that we've ever had in this country. And the fact that he was a real Progressive (at least as President) and how successful he was politically, is why I have a page dedicated to him.
