I know Thom Hartmann not only knows this, because he’s not just not an idiot, but an intelligent man, but perhaps believes his viewers aren’t aware of that.
Thom Hartmann is really combining 4 different subjects into one: slavery, high unemployment, poverty, and mass-incarceration, into one topic. And then arguing that Franklin Roosevelt had the silver-bullet solution to dealing with high unemployment back in the 1930s. Not mentioning the fact that unemployment was still 17.2% at the end of 1939. Compare that with 3/2% right before 1929 stock market crash.
Again, businesses are in the business to make money, at least when they’re for-profit and privately own. Thom Hartmann works for himself and makes a good living doing what he does, in one of the biggest, wealthiest, and most expensive cities to live in, at least in America, which is Washington. Workers obviously work for a living, to pay their bills, to have a good life, etc. Slaves and prisoners, are simply trying to get through each day, while they’re someone else’s property
